Holiday thoughts from Roy
As the Christmas holiday approaches, Thanksgiving provides an occasion to prepare our minds and hearts to reflect upon the why of our celebration. Since these seasons are most often focused within our families the why of our rejoicing should contemplate how Christ impacts our lives and the lives we share together. Christ is the silent partner in my becoming more then I could become if I was without him the world. He is my back up!
I learned the importance of a good back up partner when I served as a police officer in Los Angeles Police Department, I would use a story to help paint a word picture of the attributes of a good back up partner. The date is June 6. 1971, the time midnight, my partner Duane Benell were working a crime suppression detail out of platoon D Metro.
We were driving an unmarked police vehicle with magnetized door panels on the front doors of the vehicle. While driving through a residential area in the Wilshire area we came upon a yellow cab stopped in the roadway. The cab had its interior lights on and two young male blacks were hitting the cab driver repeatedly, as our vehicle approached the suspects responded to our approach by throwing their doors open and running. The suspect in the rear ran to the left and the other suspect from the front seat ran to the right. I ran in pursuit of the suspect who ran to the left and Duane took off for the guy who ran to the right. I caught up with my suspect after a short foot pursuit and following a fight brought on by his resistance I placed him on the ground and handcuffed him with both hands behind his back. I helped him to his feet and we began walking to the police vehicle when I heard what sounded like a gunfire report coming from the direction that my partner and his suspect had run to. Police policy would not allow me to place my arrestee in the back of the police vehicle and leave him un-supervised, yet I knew that I must go to check on my partner. So, I looked around I saw a telephone pole nearby and took the suspect and handcuffed him to the pole. I then ran to find my partner a couple blocks away with his suspect in custody and handcuffed. My partner had heard also heard what might have been gun shot but it had come some distance and north of where he was. The cab driver reported that he was being robbed and the assaults began when he reused to give them his and the cab companies money.
A good back-up partner is willing to put the needs of others before his own needs and wants. The partner must have the courage to place himself at risk in the service of a greater cause or team objective. The back-up must be willing to function to compensate for any shortcomings that is experienced by the partner in order to accomplish the shared goal. This is my Christ, his sacrifice gives me prospective and courage!
Therefore, my gratitude grows, and I celebrate all that Christ has done in my behalf, I stand amazed at his courage to suffer in order to bring forward a path I may follow leading to salvation and the potential for Eternal Life. I know of his mercy for me and bask in his Loving support and encouragement. The scriptures keep his teachings and example alive in my mind and heart. Through my Temple worship, the ordinances, assist me in learning my potential as I sense his hand ever outstretched to beckon me forward. Because of my efforts I know that his kindness and peace shall not depart from me.
May we all have reason for an attitude of gratitude as we consider the blessing of his coming in our behalf.
